Why would I ever want a mp3 converter?

There are a number of reasons to convert digital audio files. Below is a list of basic conversion options and the reasoning behind them:

Encoding (wav to mp3 converter): Most CD rippers grab audio tracks from a CD and save them to your hard drive in wave format. The wave format is very large and can fill up a hard drive fast, so what do you do? You convert them to MP3. MP3 is a much smaller than wav and sounds just as good as the original wave file if you encode it to a quality bitrate (192kbps or higher).

Decoding (mp3 to wav converter): The most used conversion option is probably mp3 to wave. Usually MP3 is converted to wave for one simple reason: to make custom audio cd's that play in regular cd's players. Once a mp3 is converted to wave it can be burnt to cd using software like Nero Burning ROM, or Easy CD Creator that are usually included with your CDRW drive.

Ripping (CD to wave converter): If you want to grab audio files off of a CD and save them on your hard drive, you need a CD ripper. A CD ripper grabs the tracks off the CD and saves them as wave files on your hard drive. Some rippers can automatically encode the tracks to MP3 if you want.

Burning (burns wave or mp3 to CD): If you want to make regular audio CD's from mp3's or wave's, you will need a burner. Burners take either mp3's or wave's and burn them to CD (if mp3, it converts to wave first). The finished product is a CD that will play in any regular CD player.
